AUSVSSA first t20 The long-awaited T20 series between Australia and South Africa began on August 10, 2025, at Darwin’s Marrara Cricket Ground. This started a new phase of competition leading up to the 2026 T20 World Cup.
This series is particularly important because it is Darwin’s first time hosting international cricket in 17 years. The Australian cricket team brought the best Australian pace to defeat the West Indies team. With Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood back to add depth, the team, captained by Mitchell Marsh, featured key bowlers and great hitters. South Africa, led by captain Aiden Markram, was keen to bounce back from a recent defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship final and a T20I series loss in New Zealand, even though the latter team was without many of its best players.
Aus VS SA t20 2025: Australia Brings Their Best Pace attack
A balanced speed and spin attack powered by Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and left-arm spinner George Linde allowed South Africa to test Darwin’s surface after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. The pitch, which was unfamiliar to most players, originally suited pace but became worn as the game went on, making it difficult to score runs, particularly in the evening when it was moist and wet.
Australia’s top order collapsed to 30/3, putting their new opening duo of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh to the test early. The middle order performed little better, reaching 75/6 at one point. Tim David, however, had a masterful counterattacking display, hitting 83 off 52 balls with eight sixes and four fours. Together with resistance from the bottom order, his effort helped Australia reach a respectable 178 all out in 20 overs. Kabena Mafka bowled very well, he really made a difference in the entire South African team. He took 4 wickets for 20 runs in 4 overs, that made a difference in the team.

Australia was on the verge of a very easy victory when Ryan Rickelton swung over the line to a Ben Dwarshius delivery in the final over of the game. Maxwell was just waiting to end Ryan Rickleton’s brilliant batting when the ball that was coming towards him pushed himself over the boundary line because it was a six and flipped the ball over his shoulder into the field of play and took the catch, showing a powerful and extraordinary example of fielding. He fell outside the ropes but quickly jumped back in to finish the incredible catch. Ryan Rickelton hammered 71 off 55 balls to cap up his excellent innings. But then South Africa needed 21 runs off 5 balls but that was not completed just because of that catch. Australia won by 17 runs after scoring 178 earlier thanks to Tim David’s powerful 52-ball 83.
